Finding Jesus in the Storm

March 3, 2025

Pain and suffering are unavoidable. At some point, we all face storms—some that we bring on ourselves, others that happen for reasons we don’t understand. But in every storm, we have a choice: will we grow through it or be overcome by it?

In Matthew 8, Jesus and His disciples are caught in a violent storm. The disciples panic, but Jesus sleeps. When they wake Him, He calms the storm with a word. This passage reveals three key truths about navigating suffering:

1. Look for Jesus in the Storm

  • The disciples searched for Jesus when they were afraid.
  • In our suffering, we must actively seek Him through prayer, Scripture, and community.
  • Isaiah 26:3 reminds us that God keeps in perfect peace those whose minds are fixed on Him.

2. Wait on His Power

  • Jesus didn’t immediately calm the storm; He first asked the disciples, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?”
  • Sometimes, we want instant relief, but God’s timing is different.
  • Isaiah 40:31 says, “Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength.” Eagles don’t fly by flapping—they soar by waiting for the wind. We must learn to do the same.

3. Grow Through the Storm

  • Suffering, though painful, can deepen our faith.
  • Romans 5:3-5 teaches that suffering produces endurance, character, and hope.
  • James 1:2-4 even calls us to rejoice in trials, knowing they refine and mature us.

No matter what storm you’re facing, know this: Jesus is already there. Seek Him, trust His timing, and let your faith grow.

What storm are you in today? How can you shift your focus from the waves to the One who calms them?
